Independent Living Units (ILUs)

  • ILUs are residential units intended for older people who wish to maintain their independent living status within a secure, safe and caring environment.
  • The concept of the scheme is to offer the occupier of the ILU complete independence or a degree of intervention, as required from the onsite nursing home, thereby enjoying the best of both worlds.
  • These ILUs are operated and managed by a registered nursing home which provides medical and nursing care. At Portumna Village we also offer all of the facilities of the nursing home from food to laundry and housekeeping.
  • Neighbours will be like-minded and of a similar age, creating companionship and a close-knit community.
  • The units - usually in clusters of 10 or more - provide an ideal living environment for older or infirm people who can continue to enjoy privacy and independence.
  • An onsite caretaker must  always be available to deal with emergencies and maintenance issues. The caretaker also forms part of the security arrangements.
  • Each unit contains one or two bedrooms, a kitchen, a living room, bath or shower, a toilet and a nurse call system linked to the nursing home.

Choice of House

  • Houses are single or two-bed and are designed
  • Houses can be purchased or leased and the house occupier will pay an annual fee to the Nursing Home for services provided. This fee will depend on the level of service required by the resident.
  • Emergency response to residents of the ILUs
  • Village accessed through controlled gates
  • Houses can be leased.
